Who This Course Is For

βœ… Office Executives

Professionals who create reports, track data, and prepare monthly summaries β€” and want to stop doing it manually.

βœ… MIS Assistants

Staff already in MIS roles who need to move from basic formulas to real dashboards and automated reports.

βœ… Job Seekers

Anyone preparing for roles that include an Excel test in the interview β€” analyst, reporting, operations, back-office.

βœ… Business Owners & Managers

Owners who want to read their own sales, stock, and expense data without waiting for someone else to prepare reports.

Excel version matters: XLOOKUP and dynamic array functions require Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 or later. If your office uses Excel 2019 or earlier, we teach INDEX/MATCH as the compatible alternative. Always tell us your office version during counselling.

Eight modules, each built around a practical task. You will work on sample business data β€” sales, expenses, stock β€” and produce reports that look like real office output.

Formula Examples You Will Practise

Every formula below is syntactically correct and works in the version stated. Version-specific functions are flagged.

SUMIFS β€” Sum with multiple conditions

Total sales for the "North" region in the month of "Apr-2025":

=SUMIFS(Sales[Amount], Sales[Region], "North", Sales[Month], "Apr-2025")

XLOOKUP β€” Modern lookup (Microsoft 365 / Excel 2021+)

Find the price of a product by its code:

=XLOOKUP(A2, Products[Code], Products[Price], "Not Found")
Version note: XLOOKUP is not available in Excel 2019 or earlier. If your office uses the older version, use the INDEX/MATCH formula below.

INDEX/MATCH β€” Works in all Excel versions

Same lookup, compatible with Excel 2010 and later:

=INDEX(Products[Price], MATCH(A2, Products[Code], 0))

COUNTIFS β€” Count with multiple conditions

Count how many orders are "Pending" and above β‚Ή10,000:

=COUNTIFS(Orders[Status], "Pending", Orders[Amount], ">10000")

IFERROR β€” Clean error handling

Return "Not Found" instead of #N/A:

=IFERROR(VLOOKUP(A2, Products, 3, FALSE), "Not Found")

Assignments You Will Complete

Assignment 1: Clean a Messy Sales File

You receive a 500-row export with inconsistent names, extra spaces, duplicate rows, and mixed date formats. Your task: clean every column, split combined fields, remove duplicates, and produce a tidy table ready for analysis.

Assignment 2: Build a Monthly Sales MIS

From the cleaned data, create a one-page MIS with:

Assignment 3: Build a Dashboard

Design a one-page dashboard with:

Assignment 4: Automate Monthly Report Refresh

Using Power Query, import data from a folder of monthly CSV files. Build a query that merges them into one table and refreshes with a single click.

Portfolio note: You may keep your dashboard and MIS assignments as portfolio samples for interviews. Use only sample/practice data β€” never real client or company data.

Technical Interview Questions

These are commonly asked in MIS and analyst interviews. Each answer is technically correct.

Q1: What is the difference between VLOOKUP and XLOOKUP?
VLOOKUP searches only to the right of the lookup column, breaks if columns are inserted, and requires a column index number. XLOOKUP can search in any direction, handles exact and approximate matches cleanly, returns a default value if not found, and does not break when columns are inserted. XLOOKUP requires Microsoft 365 or Excel 2021 or later.
Q2: When would you use INDEX/MATCH instead of VLOOKUP?
Use INDEX/MATCH when the lookup column is to the right of the return column, when you want a more robust formula that does not break on column insertion, or when you are working in Excel 2019 or earlier where XLOOKUP is unavailable.
Q3: What is the difference between SUMIF and SUMIFS?
SUMIF applies one condition. SUMIFS applies multiple conditions and is more flexible. In modern Excel, SUMIFS is generally preferred even for single-condition sums because the argument order is consistent.
Q4: How do you handle #N/A errors in a lookup?
Wrap the lookup in IFERROR: =IFERROR(VLOOKUP(...), "Not Found"). Alternatively, use XLOOKUP's built-in if_not_found argument: =XLOOKUP(..., "Not Found").
Q5: What is a PivotTable and when would you use it?
A PivotTable summarises large datasets by grouping, counting, summing, or averaging values across categories. Use it for quick analysis of sales by region, expenses by month, or any dataset where you need totals and subtotals without writing formulas.
Q6: What is Power Query used for?
Power Query is Excel's data import and transformation tool. It is used to connect to files, folders, databases, or web sources, clean and reshape the data, and load the result into a table or PivotTable. The transformation steps are recorded and can be refreshed with one click when the source data changes.
Q7: What is the difference between relative and absolute cell references?
A relative reference (A1) changes when the formula is copied to another cell. An absolute reference ($A$1) stays fixed. A mixed reference ($A1 or A$1) locks only the column or only the row. Absolute references are used when a formula must always refer to the same cell β€” for example, a tax rate or a target value.

Prerequisites & Course Selection

Prerequisites

  • Comfort with basic Excel β€” entering data, simple formulas, opening files
  • Ability to use a mouse and keyboard confidently
  • No programming experience needed
  • If you have never used Excel, start with Basic Computer & Typing first

Advanced Excel vs Data Analytics

Advanced Excel & MIS focuses on Excel-based reporting and dashboards. Data Analytics adds SQL and Power BI for larger datasets and interactive reports. If your target role mentions SQL or Power BI, take Data Analytics after Excel. If your role is Excel-only, this course is sufficient.

Excel before Tally?

If you are moving into accounts work, Tally first (it teaches the accounting workflow) then Excel. If your work is already report-based, Excel can come first.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes, a certificate is issued on completion by the institute. Ask for the exact certificate issuer name and any recognition details in writing before enrolling.
